A side trip to Nazaré. Report 6.10.23: Klara Küpker from the Dionysianum writes about the visit to Leiria

After the eventful previous days, we continued on Friday with a trip to Nazaré. Before the actual visit to Nazaré, however, the bus stopped at other small beaches to show the students these as well. Here there are often the so-called “big waves” on which world championships have already been held (see report below). Unfortunately, the waves on this day were only very shallow. From the beach in Nazaré we walked over a viewpoint in excellent weather to the actual town. Once there, two hours of free time awaited the group of students to explore Stradt. Later, a visit to the Mosteiro de Batalha church was on the agenda. The highlight there was the exchange of the guards who guard a sacred monument. In the evening there was the final party where everyone brought something to eat and where the students received their certificates.
Annotation: Big wave surfing, as practiced in Nazaré, is different from traditional surfing. First of all, big wave surfing is when the wave size is about 20 feet. This corresponds to about 6 meters. In Nazaré, however, the big waves can be over 30 meters. Unlike traditional surfing, where you ride waves that usually break in shallow waters, big wave surfing takes place in deep water. The waves are not only big and powerful, but also very fast and difficult to master.
