Intercultural exchange at Centro S. Antonio
Rheine.cpr. When different cultures meet, it is usually interesting and unproblematic. But when you take a closer look, you sometimes notice things that seem strange at first glance and that you can’t explain yourself. Some former trainees of the city administration Rheine accepted the invitation to an event at the Centro S. Antonio, the intercultural meeting center of Caritas Rheine. The event “Experience Cultures” is part of equipping the employees of the city administration Rheine with intercultural competence. Under the leadership of Johanna Miltrup, an employee of the city Rheine and Kevin Löcke, an employee of the Caritas Association Rheine, the participants first received a workshop on the topic of intercultural competence and reflection on their own perceptions. Miltrup and Löcke are responsible for the field of action “intercultural opening” of the migration and integration concept of the city Rheine and experts in the promotion of intercultural competence of employees. After this theoretical excursion, things got much more interactive. Volunteers with a migration history enriched the round with their experiences around this topic as multipliers of their own cultures. In a “speed meeting”, the participants exchanged views in short conversations and gained exciting insights into the lives of the people sitting opposite them.
The program was rounded off with a joint cooking session. The migrants brought the ingredients of their favorite dishes and a varied menu was prepared in the kitchen. A Moroccan rice and tuna salad, an Afghan rice pan with chicken curry and a Moroccan pudding with nuts and caramel were prepared together and under the experienced eyes of the people with migration experience.
At the joint dinner, the exchange was deepened and contacts were made. All participants agreed that it was a successful and colorful afternoon. Both Johanna Miltrup and Kevin Löcke as well as the training manager of the city Rheine, Florentine Kühs-Sandmann, would like to offer the project for further training years of the city administration Rheine.
