International Museum Day will be held for the 46th time in 2023. The date this time is Sunday, May 21. The aim of this day is to draw greater attention to museums in Germany and around the world, as their potential is often only spotlighted on certain occasions, such as exhibition openings. “Museums are places of remembrance, discovery and reflection. They contribute significantly to our national identity and promote social exchange,” says Bundesrat President Dr. Peter Tschentscher, the patron of this year’s Museum Day.

The municipal museums Rheine offer, throughout the day, a whole range of free activities on this day: At 10 am, the museum studio in the Falkenhof opens with a painting activity for children (until 2 pm). “Fruits, flowers and a teddy bear” – under this motto, young museum guests can create still lifes with brushes, acrylic paints and oil crayons, taking their cue from the masterpieces in the museum. A stuffed animal or favorite toy is welcome to be brought from home. Then, at 11 a.m., the guided tour “Kunststücke” (Pieces of Art) begins for adults, during which museum educator Alexandra Dolezych demonstrates the stylistic diversity of the art scene in the 20th century by means of paintings and graphics. The tour continues at Museum Kloster Bentlage with a curator’s tour of the new special exhibition “Johanna Love. Drawing in the Garden of Infinite Time,” which can be visited all day with free admission. In terms of time, this exhibition project builds a bridge from the medieval relic gardens to the works of a contemporary artist who incorporates findings from electron microscopy into her drawings and prints. And from 4 – 6 p.m., the salt workshop and the technical monument in the Salzsiedehaus open. Here you can learn a lot of interesting facts about Rheines past as a salt town, since the historic boiling pans, furnaces and salt warehouses have been preserved to this day. It is especially exciting for children to try out salt boiling in small pans in the salt workshop. And finally, it is also worth taking a tour of the neighboring Josef Winckler Museum, which provides information about the life and work of the famous writer. Admission is free.
