Planting trees for climate protection on Monday
Rheine. The city of Rheine is once again taking part in the nationwide “Unity Tree Planting” campaign on October 3. All citizens are invited to plant a tree on German Unity Day.
So that everyone can join in the digging, the city and the Technische Betriebe (TBR) have again prepared a planting area at the Hünenborg this week. There, everyone who wants to participate can plant their personal tree. The Green Team of TBR has drilled holes in a grid of 2 x 2 meters. These have a diameter of about 20 cm and are about 30 cm deep. “All that’s missing are the trees. Active climate protection is as simple as that,” says Uwe Neuber, head of public green spaces at TBR, promoting the join-in campaign. So anyone who is interested and wants to actively help dig can bring native woody plants such as maple, birch, beech or hazel with them on Monday and plant them in one of the prepared holes. The planting tool is to be brought along thereby.
In addition, the experts of the TBR ask again this year not to plant exotics, but to use the native trees, as they are best suited for the location and climate. It goes without saying that all plant pots and other utensils brought along will be taken back and disposed of at home. In the future, the permanent care of the new trees will be taken over by the green spaces department of the Technical Services.
The Unity Digging campaign was first launched in 2019 by the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Since then, Unity Digging has taken place annually throughout Germany on German Unity Day. And anyone can join in, whether in their home garden or at a public planting event like the one in Rheine.
