Civic trip of the town twinning association to Trakai in Lithuania started

Rhine/Trakai. Full of tension the participants started on Monday morning the citizen journey Lithuania. Wolfgang Nehus had organized this journey for the town twinning association Rheine again. Highlight will be the participation in the anniversary celebrations. Because Trakai looks back on 700 years of history and celebrates this special anniversary on September 8.

After the start at 4:20 a.m. from Emstor Square, the group reached the Puttgarden-Rödby ferry in Denmark after a long journey. During the onward journey in Denmark, the Öresund Bridge was crossed.

The Öresund Bridge is the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge for combined road and rail traffic. Together with the Drogden Tunnel and the artificial island of Peberholm, it forms the Öresund toll link, which connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden and has thus been instrumental in opening up the Öresund region. The border runs 883 meters west of the western pair of pylonsand is marked by signs located at the nearest sign bridge. The bridge was opened to traffic on July 1, 2000. The total length of the bridge is 7845 meters.

In Sweden we continued to the port of Karlshamn where the ferry M/V Prins Richard was waiting to cross to Kleipeda in Lithuania.

The participants spent the night on the ferry so that they could start the second day of the trip well rested.
