Joint action of the twinning association and the Maidan network for hospital in Ivano Frankivsk
RHEINE. Medicines and medical supplies worth about 35,000 euros were sent on their way to Ukraine from Rheine today. A transport vehicle from Ivano Frankivsk took the cargo directly on board before the drivers set off on their return journey. The destination is a military hospital in the city in southwestern Ukraine. For weeks, a large number of soldiers and civilians who were seriously injured in the fighting in eastern Ukraine have been treated there. The relief action was initiated by the twinning association of the city of Rheine and the Maidan network. “A very successful cooperation, which will hopefully contribute to effective aid,” said Reiner Wellmann, chairman of the twinning association.
Painkillers, antibiotics and, above all, insulins and bandages were requested from the military hospital. The Eschendorf pharmacy procured all the necessary materials and supported the twinning association and the Maidan network very effectively. “Without this support, the relief action would not have been possible at all,” said Reiner Wellmann and Norbert Kahle (Network Maidan) in unison yesterday.
The aid transport is another measure to help people in Ukraine directly. The twinning association had already transferred 15,000 euros to the Lithuanian twin town of Trakai. This money had already been used in April to transport medicines and food to Ivano Frankivsk and Luczk – both twin towns of Trakai in Ukraine. “Twinning work is also networking. And we are pleased that we were able to make an initial direct contribution to helping Ukraine in this way,” reports Reiner Wellmann.
The fundraising campaign launched under the motto “Friends help friends” has met with a great response in recent weeks. “We will certainly enable further aid for the people in Ukraine via our twin city in the coming weeks. We will talk about this in concrete terms with Mayor Andrius Satevicius during the anniversary weekend,” continues the chairman of the twinning association. Trakai celebrates from 3 to 5 June with a large celebration weekend the 700-year existence. The participants from Rheine want to use the opportunity to revive contacts, to discuss possibilities for a student exchange and to organize aid actions for the people in the Ukraine together.
