Village store Rodde gives a workshop employee an outside job
Rheine-Rodde. cpr. The job at the Dorfladen Rodde is not just a job for Ivan Danneberg. It is his step back into an independent life that he once lived. It is the life he lived before he fell ill. Suddenly, due to his illness, he could no longer withstand the demands of the primary labor market. In 2020, he started a vocational training program at the Caritas Emstor workshops to find out what working conditions he could cope with and what activities would be suitable for him. Now he has found his place of work in Rodde. It is a task that challenges him, but does not overwhelm him. Because there’s one thing he definitely doesn’t want: to fall ill again. The internship he is starting at the Rodde village store in early December 2021 is Ivan Danneberg’s first step toward participating in work in the general labor market. And although he makes his way to the village store every day, he remains an employee of the Caritas-Emstor workshops and appreciates the security of a disability-friendly workplace.
Desire for a life with more independence
The 31-year-old started his working life in a normal way. However, everything turned out differently and he had to discontinue his training due to illness. A rehab brought the realization: Support needs became clear, both in the personal and in the professional area. Today, he lives in a residential community supported by Caritas. However, he is working on living a completely independent life again. “An apartment of his own would be great,” Ivan Danneberg wishes. Professionally, he found his place in the Caritas Emstor workshops in 2020. Then came the job offer from the Rodde village store, which was made known through the inclusion support at the workshop. This immediately interested Danneberg. After a preparation period, he completed an internship and has now switched to an outside job at the workshop in the Rodde village store.
Path to the general labor market possible

Ivan Danneberg feels at home in the Rodde village store and is passionate about working here in all areas. For him, it’s a step toward an independent life.
“Ivan is a really great team member. He is an equal employee with us and belongs firmly in the team – even if he sometimes has a not so good day,” explains Heike Vienerius from the Dorfladen Rodde. Early on, the Dorfladen team made contact with the inclusion counselor from the
Caritas-Emstor workshops, Rita Stecker-Schürmann. “We also always wanted to provide jobs for people with impairments,” recalls Meike Pruhs, one of the initiators of the village store. “Cooperation with businesses and companies from the local region to create outsourced jobs is of great importance to the Caritas-Emstor workshops,” explains the head of the workshops, Markus Döpker. And for Ivan Danneberg there were also positive surprises: Thus, contrary to expectations, he ventures into sales at his own request, goes to the cash register as well as the meat and sausage counter as a matter of course and serves the customers.
Caritas workshops provide targeted support for employees
“The fact that Ivan has adapted so wonderfully is also due in part to the good preparation in the workshops. That really surprised us in a positive way,” emphasizes Bernhard Heeke from the Rodde village store. Participants in the vocational training area of the Caritas Emstor workshops receive individual and targeted support. In the diagnostic phase, the competencies and qualifications that can be built on are determined. The participants can try out their skills in various trades from the trades, industry and services and acquire partial qualifications. “Through internal internships in the workshops’ work groups and in-company internships in companies and institutions, they deepen their knowledge and train to cope with changing and also growing demands,” explains Rita Stecker-Schürmann. However, it is also very important during the period of vocational training to come to terms with the illness or the newly acquired handicap and to learn how to deal with it positively. Ivan has now found his way and looks forward to working at the Dorfladen Rodde every day.
